Kenneth Wayne Saffold

Our Namesake + Inspiration

Kenneth Wayne Saffold was born May 30, 1952 to Charlie Mae Saffold and the late James Harding Saffold. Kenny was raised in Birmingham, Alabama and attended the public schools.  Kenny graduated with honors from Virginia Union University, and Howard University School of Law in Washington D.C.

After Law School, Kenny worked at the Attorney General’s office, Western Life American Investments, and worked as the first black Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Minnesota.  Kenny was one of the founders and partners at Blackwell, Igbanugo, Engen & Saffold – the second largest Black-controlled law firm in the country.  He also started Saffold & Behrenbrinker in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Kenny was General Counsel for the Office of the Monitor in Pigford v. Vilsack, the African American Farmer class-action lawsuit, which is the largest settlement in civil rights history.

Kenny brings nearly twenty years experience as a federal prosecutor where he tried both civil and criminal cases. He also has extensive experience as an adjunct professor at universities and law schools, and a former member of the Board of Trustees at William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Kenny was one of the founding members of the Minnesota Minority Lawyers’ Association, and the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers, where he mentored many young African American attorneys.  He also led and participated in community activities as a mentor, advisor, volunteer, and financial supporter for organizations such as the Boy Scouts, United Negro College Fund, Virginia Union University, Howard University, and various other black colleges.  Kenny was an avid reader and served as a member of the Minneapolis Library Board.

Kenny gave his life to Christ at an early age at Rising Star Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.  Kenny was active in his church, Pilgrim Baptist, where he was the Chairman of the Deacon Board, a Trustee, Superintendent of Sunday school, Sunday school teacher (adult class), member of the Men in Courage, and a member of the Men’s Choir.  He spent many days ministering to the sick, visiting nursing homes and mentoring to elementary, junior high, high school and college students.

Kenneth Wayne Saffold was a loving family man, a man of integrity, and he had a keen sense of humor. He loved people, jazz, music, his community, and life. On October, 11, 2010, at the age of 58 Kenneth W. Saffold passed away after 2 year battle with Cancer. Kenny was married to the Reverend Stephanie C. Burroughs-Saffold for 34 years and from this blessed union were three children; Kenneth Wesley, Keary Wayne and Kathryn Elizabeth Saffold.

Over the past 15 years Mr. Saffold has successfully served the needs of people and programing in the community through various roles.  Mr. Saffold has a diverse work and volunteer background and extensive mentoring and training experiences that have equipped him to support families, school staff, youth and administration.

While working as a Mental Health Practitioner and as an Educational Support Advocate, Mr. Saffold developed a great awareness of the types of support youth and families benefit. As a former facilitator for the “Rites of Passage Program” and “Save Our Sons” he knows how to help youth develop life skills and make life changing decisions.

Mr. Saffold holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services, as well as a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership. He has consulted and volunteered for schools and non-profit agencies for the past several years which has allowed him to work very closely with all stakeholders to find innovative solutions to challenges within our communities and become a great source of motivation to people from all walks of life.

Keary decided to venture into the world of independent consulting in 2006. After years of experiencing red tape and systemic barriers that prevent direct service providers from being productive and connecting youth to resources that make meaningful differences, he created Saffold Consulting Incorporated.

Saffold Consulting has found a niche that allows him to utilize existing resources and form supportive partnerships that resolve problems and achieve objectives. Saffold Consulting extends exciting opportunities to non-profit organizations, schools and churches to offer short and long term Life Skills Groups and one on one Mentoring sessions. Saffold Consulting has also provided services which worked extensively with juveniles who have committed high and low level offensives and knows how to work strategically with them to get positive results.


Reginald Prince

Reginald Prince is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT since 2008), a Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI 4.1) coder and trainer with experience in developing trainers in corrections, chemical dependency, vocational rehabilitation, education, medical field and juvenile treatment. He has developed his skills as a practitioner, trainer and coach over his 25-year career in staff development working with highly diverse populations.

Mr. Prince is a nationally recognized trainer of many evidence based practices in including cognitive behavioral programming, case management, risk assessment and motivational interviewing. He has consulted for many departments and agencies in local, state and national agencies. His consultation has included strategic planning, implementation, and continuous quality improvement.

Through his experience in public and private organizations he has recognized the need for discussing inequities and injustice and feels compelled to offer evidence based solutions to these issues. Reginald has devoted himself to equipping parents, organization staff and communities with skills that promote self sufficiency and self worth for under served people.
